I am very pleased to announce that HM The Queen has appointed HRH The
Earl of Wessex KG GCVO ADC to be the first Royal Honorary Colonel of The
London Regiment, from 1 May 2011. He will be referred to as Colonel, The London Regiment.
Colonel Jeremy Mooney QVRM TD has also been appointed Regimental
Lieutenant Colonel, and will chair the Regimental Council. The title of
Regimental Lieutenant Colonel has been adopted to conform with the
Guards Division.
As a mark of respect for his grandmother, HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen
Mother, HRH will wear the uniform and badges of the London Scottish. The
Queen Mother was appointed Royal Honorary Colonel of the London Scottish
Regiment when she was still the Duchess of York in 1935, and held the
post until her death in 2002.
Prior to the appointment of a Royal Honorary Colonel, the practice had
been for The London Regiment to appoint former Lord Mayors of the City
of London as Regimental Honorary Colonel. This valuable link to the City
will be preserved by the appointment of a serving Alderman to the
Regimental Council. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our
outgoing Regimental Honorary Colonel, Colonel Sir Michael Savory, for
all his support to the Regiment over the last 5 years.
Second Lieutenant Matt Jones of B (The Queen's Regiment) Company is appointed
the Colonel's Temporary Equerry and will support HRH in his role as
Royal Honorary Colonel, specifically accompanying him whenever he is
carrying out military duties in London. Pipe Major Jim McLucas, London
Regiment Pipe Major, has been appointed Personal Piper to the Royal
Honorary Colonel. He will wear the personal badge of The Earl of Wessex
on his upper right arm. This badge will also be carried on the obverse
side of his pipe banner, with The London Regiment crest on the reverse.
HRH's first duty as Royal Honorary Colonel will be at the YPRES Coy
Homecoming Parade on 8 May, and he is planning to visit the Regiment on
ATP.
I am sure you will agree these appointments are excellent news for the
Regiment and will certainly strengthen our standing and reputation.
M A J OVERTON TD
